October is “National Dental Hygiene Month”
Tandem Health remains committed to the health and well-being of our Sumter community. Lisa Hellams, RDH, a Dental Hygienist at Tandem Health Dental, discusses the importance of flossing your teeth. Flossing is an important part of daily oral hygiene. Flossing once a day helps remove plaque and debris from between the teeth and gums where periodontal disease often begins.
Tips for proper flossing:
- Wind approximately 18 inches of floss around your middle fingers on each hand. Pinch the floss between your thumbs and index fingers, leaving 1-2 inches length in between. Use your thumbs to direct the floss between your upper teeth.
- Keep a 1-2 inch length of floss taut between your fingers. Use index fingers to guide the floss between contacts of the lower teeth.
- Gently guide floss between the teeth by using a zig-zag motion. Gently wrap floss around the side of the tooth.
- Slide floss up and down against the tooth surface and under the gum line. Wrap the floss around each tooth in the shape of a C.
